First Case Report of Rabies in a Wolf (Canis Lupus Pallipes) from India
نویسنده
چکیده
This is the first documented evidence of rabies in the Indian wolf (Canis lupus pallipes) to date. The study describes the laboratory confirmation of rabies in wolf from the southern Indian state of Karnataka by the direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) test and a direct rapid immunohistochemistry test (dRIT). The PCR amplified products of complete N and G genes of this wolf RABV were sequenced and processed. The BLAST results and phylogenetic analysis revealed high homology and genetic relatedness of this RABV isolate with those from nearby geographic locations such as in India (human, buffalo), Pakistan (wolf, cattle) and Nepal (goat). Analysis of the deduced amino acid sequences of the complete N and G proteins revealed that wolf RABV isolate recovered in this study belonged to the Arctic-like lineage, which is wide spread throughout the Indian subcontinent, and the region. These findings emphacise the necessity of epidemiological surveillance to characterize regional lyssaviruses to ascertain if wolves (and other wild species) serve as a significant population for RABV enzootic maintenance in India.

In recent decades due to steady human population growth coupled with increased use of resources and habitat degradation, conflicts between humans and carnivores have greatly been expanded. In order to mitigate these conflicts based on a clear understanding of conflict patterns, applying the species distribution models as helpful methods has been suggested. Occurring the recent conflict betwee...
متن کاملThe Role of the Gray Wolf in Rabies Transmission in Iran and Preliminary Assessment of an Oral Rabies Vaccine in this Animal
Introduction: In Iran, 95% of animal bites are attributed to domestic dogs and cats, while one-third of rabies victims are from wildlife. The wolf is one of the primary vectors of wildlife in the country. This study was aimed to assess the impact of wildlife on rabies transmission and to evaluate the efficacy of an oral rabies vaccine (ORV) in the gray wolf (Canis lupus pallipes). Methods: We s...

A 3-year-old wild gray wolf was referred to the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences of ShirazUniversity with a history of car accident. The radiographic examination showed supracondylar distal femoralfracture in right leg. The wolf was pre-medicated by acepromazine followed by induction of anesthesia usinga combination of diazepam and ketamine. Anesthesia was maintained by halothane. The...
متن کاملHowl variation across Himalayan, North African, Indian, and Holarctic wolf clades: tracing divergence in the world’s oldest wolf lineages using acoustics
Vocal divergence within species often corresponds to morphological, environmental, and genetic differences between populations. Wolf howls are long-range signals that encode individual, group, and subspecies differences, yet the factors that may drive this variation are poorly understood. Furthermore, the taxonomic division within the Canis genus remains contended and additional data are requir...
متن کاملLupus Vulgaris of the Pinna-A Case Report
Introduction: Lupus vulgaris is the most common form of cutaneous tuberculosis caused by contiguous spread from an underlying infective focus or lymphatic or hematogenous spread. It can also develop at the site of direct inoculation (e.g., tattooing and ear piercing) or Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccination. The solitary involvement of the pinna is rare and may face clinicians with a diagn...
